Landfills are one of the most significant and continuous sources of methane (CH4) emissions worldwide. As organic waste such as food scraps, paper, textiles, and wood decomposes under anaerobic conditions deep within the landfill body, large amounts of landfill gas (LFG) are generated, which is typically mainly composed of methane, a highly flammable gas. The leakage of methane may present safety hazards challenges for landfills site.

Within a landfill, methane is generated continuously and certain areas present particularly high risks. Gas treatment facilities are the most critical, as collected landfill gas is processed, compressed, or used for power generation here. Any leaks from pipelines, pumps, or valves in these semi-enclosed spaces may cause dangerous accumulations, leading to fire or explosion. Buildings and workspaces inside the landfill site also require attention, since methane can migrate underground and infiltrate offices, warehouses, or garages, posing threats to personnel safety. Furthermore, the gas collection infrastructure including main pipelines, flanges, condensate drains, and collection wells also have the risks of methane leaks. Therefore, the deployment of effective leakage detection is essential for reducing the risk of uncontrolled emissions in advance, ensuring operational safety, preventing explosions, and supporting sustainable landfills management.

However, traditional gas detection technologies face many challenges in such environments. High humidity, fluctuating temperatures, and the presence of gases like CO2, H2S, NH3, and VOCs can lead to inaccurate readings or false alarms. To address these difficulties, Cubic, a leading manufacturer of gas sensors and analyzers, has launched innovative Gasboard-2501 methane sensor. Based on advanced Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) technology, Gasboard-2501 provides highly accurate, real-time methane detection with excellent selectivity, ensuring that it is unaffected by interfering gases or water vapor even under complex field conditions.

By adopting a narrow-band tunable laser source, optimized gas chambers, and a refined optical path design, Gasboard-2501 delivers accurate and stable measurement. Its rapid response enables quick detection of leaks or fluctuations, giving landfill operators the time to take preventive actions before risks happens. In confined or high-risk areas, once methane levels reach the set threshold of the lower explosive limit (about 10–25% LEL) across a 0–100%LEL range, it will instantly trigger audible and visual alarms and automatically activate forced ventilation. Moreover, with the inherent stability of laser-based technology, the sensor offers long-term reliability, minimal drift, and a service life exceeding ten years, which greatly reduces the need for frequent maintenance and recalibration.

Safety is further guaranteed through its intrinsic safety design. Cubic Gasboard-2501 follows ATEX and IECEx Ex ia IIC T4 Ga standards, allowing safe operation in hazardous zones across the landfill, making it suitable for integration into stationary gas detection systems at landfill site, including gas treatment plants, building interiors, and collection system infrastructure, ensuring comprehensive methane leak monitoring coverage for the entire site.

With the combination of precision, stability, and safety, Cubic Gasboard-2501 provides landfill operators with a powerful tool to enhance operational security and environmental performance, while supporting the broader goal of building safer and more sustainable landfills management.
